Lightspeed survey shows: Price plays the main role at Christmas parties, two thirds celebrate several times, but cheaply
- New construction of an apartment building for student housing in the Munich-Trudering district
- 9 percent p. a. bullet interest with a term until January 31, 2028
- Investors can invest from 500 euros
Berlin, November 24, 2025 – As soon as the first gingerbread cookies appear in the supermarket, many people are rolling their eyes – and already planning their Christmas parties. According to a recent Appinio survey commissioned by Lightspeed, the leading provider of cloud-based POS systems and payment platforms, a third of Germans already start planning in October and a quarter even in September.
And they celebrate extensively: 65% of respondents attend two to three Christmas parties. From the office to family and friends – Germany is in a festive mood. Only: cheap, please.

Contemplative, but with a receipt please
Between mulled wine, goose and conviviality, Germans are keeping track: Value for money (43.8%) is one of the top criteria for a successful party – right after good food (64.5%) and atmosphere (50%). Christmas parties with a budget of between 31 and 50 euros per person are the most popular, usually outside the home (43%) – for example in restaurants, event locations or at the Christmas market.
Pragmatism applies when it comes to payment: 77% want clear prices and simple payment options. Card payment is the most popular (38%), followed by cash payment (29%). Surprises? No surprises – Germans prefer things to be orderly here too.
Typically German: good food, good atmosphere – but without chaos, please
When it comes to food, Germans can’t take a joke: for two thirds of them, a classic Christmas meal such as goose or roast is an absolute must.
Sustainability and creative cuisine? Gladly – as long as the price-performance ratio is right. The atmosphere can be festive, but not wild: 94% attach importance to a good mood, 88% to good behavior. And the things that dampen the festive mood are clear: unfriendly staff (58%), a bad atmosphere (53%) or long waiting times (47.6%).
In short: everything should be beautifully planned, neatly served – and no mess.
Last-minute tips from restaurateur Isabelle Pering
Isabelle Pering, owner of bellasLOKAL in the Taunus region, has very simple strategies for anyone who doesn’t yet have a location: “If you stay flexible, you can celebrate in a more relaxed way – and often at a lower price,” says Pering. “Mondays or Tuesdays are often still free when the weekends have long been fully booked.”
Your tips:
- Plan flexibly: choose weekdays instead of weekends.
- Small but nice: a Christmas party in a small group is easier to organize.
- Menu instead of à la carte: Saves time, money and nerves.
- Think creatively: A Christmas brunch outside of opening hours can be a real alternative.
Conclusion: Well planned is half the party
Plan early, celebrate cleverly, eat well – that sounds like the German recipe for success for the festive season. Because the survey clearly shows one thing: contemplation and budget awareness go wonderfully well together.
Methodology:
Lightspeed conducted a consumer survey in November 2025 together with the survey provider Appinio. Appinio surveyed 1,000 people in Germany between the ages of 18 and 65. The survey was conducted online.
