State of Process Orchestration and Automation Report" Warns of Impending "Automation Chaos" / Majority of Companies Struggle to Operationalize AI Enterprise-Wide

BERLIN/SAN FRANCISCO – Camunda, the leading company in process orchestration and automation, has released its "2025 State of Process Orchestration and Automation Report." The report reveals that 85 percent of German companies (82 percent internationally) fear "digital chaos," caused by increasingly complex, interconnecte

  • 83 percent (85 percent internationally) of companies face challenges in scaling and operationalizing AI across the enterprise.
  • 82 percent (84 percent internationally) report that a lack of transparency in the use of AI within business processes leads to compliance issues.
  • 94 percent (93 percent internationally) believe that AI must be fully integrated into orchestrated processes to achieve maximum ROI and deliver the greatest business value.

Unlocking Value Through Process Orchestration

Many companies have already implemented extensive automation solutions but struggle to manage these effectively across different systems and processes. Successful organizations harness the value of automation by utilizing process orchestration as a key capability to coordinate all moving parts or endpoints of a business process and, in some cases, integrate multiple processes.

d, and automated processes. According to the findings, companies now manage an average of approximately 50 endpoints (50 internationally) to execute tasks that are part of their business processes—a 17 percent increase (19 percent internationally) over the past five years—significantly raising business risks.

The report highlights that 81 percent of German companies (82 percent internationally) face higher compliance risks due to a lack of control, while 79 percent (77 percent internationally) see a greater risk of core process failures. Alarmingly, 82 percent of respondents (in Germany and internationally) believe these risks could lead to "automation chaos" if left unchecked.

Kurt Petersen, Senior Vice President of Customer Success at Camunda, explains: "End-to-end process orchestration and automation are critical for delivering business outcomes. However, today’s digital infrastructures and processes are complex and interdependent—posing a significant challenge."

He adds: "Many companies struggle with siloed tools and technologies, making it difficult to optimize workflows and gain a complete overview. Without decisive action, automation initiatives risk overwhelming organizations—with fragile solutions, poor governance, high overall costs, and declining agility. Companies failing to take control of their automation efforts will ultimately be left behind by savvy competitors who have mastered process orchestration and automation."

AI: The Challenge of Scaling and Operationalizing

Artificial intelligence is transforming how businesses operate by leveraging large language models (LLMs), machine learning, and other AI-enabled functions to streamline processes and improve customer experiences. However, AI is often deployed as an isolated point solution for individual tasks rather than embedded into an enterprise-wide strategy. While most companies aim to expand their AI capabilities over the next three years, they face significant challenges in effectively scaling and operationalizing AI.

Process Orchestration in German Companies

  • 85 percent (82 percent internationally) of surveyed companies see the need for better tools to manage process interfaces.
  • 83 percent (79 percent internationally) say they have comprehensive automation solutions in place but lack the ability to effectively control, manage, and sustain them over the long term.
  • 81 percent (86 percent internationally) are convinced that hyperautomation is impossible without process orchestration.
  • 81 percent (both in Germany and internationally) believe that without process orchestration, the path to becoming an autonomous enterprise is merely an illusion.

Petersen concludes: "If companies want to successfully operationalize AI across their entire business operations, AI applications and services must be orchestrated like any other endpoint within automated business processes. Only then can compliance requirements be met and the return on investment for AI maximized. Process orchestration is the key to managing complexity, connecting legacy systems, and coordinating diverse endpoints. Without it, hyperautomation and the autonomous enterprise will remain unattainable for most organizations."
