Support for the LGBTQIA+ Community: Lieferando Launches Nationwide Queer-Friendly Restaurant Guide

  • Lieferando Introduces the Lieferando Pride Guide Featuring Queer-Friendly Restaurants
  • The guide is a response to concerning survey results among the LGBTQIA+ community and will be continuously expanded.
  • The restaurants included in the Lieferando Pride Guide were selected based on their commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community and recommendations from it.

Berlin, July 24, 2024 — Lieferando is launching the Lieferando Pride Guide, highlighting queer-run and queer-friendly restaurants across Germany. This guide provides the LGBTQIA+ community and its supporters with a safe and inclusive selection of dining options. Through this project, Lieferando actively promotes the visibility and support of the LGBTQIA+ community, creating safe spaces where everyone feels welcome.

A Safe Space for All

Support for the LGBTQIA+ community is a core aspect of Lieferando's company culture. To uncover discrimination faced by queer individuals in the hospitality sector, the company recently conducted a survey of 1,049 LGBTQIA+ individuals in Germany. The findings were concerning:

  • 21% of respondents feel uncomfortable in restaurants due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • 15% have experienced discrimination, with 53% of these incidents involving restaurant staff.
  • 60.6% of transgender respondents prefer to have food delivered because they feel unsafe in restaurants.
  • Only 18% of those affected witnessed staff addressing queer-phobic behavior from other guests.

The Lieferando Pride Guide: A Symbol of Inclusion

Safe spaces should not be hard to find. Therefore, Lieferando has developed the Lieferando Pride Guide as an ongoing project. The featured restaurants were carefully chosen based on recommendations from the LGBTQIA+ community, active LGBTQIA+-friendly communication, and inclusive company policies. Participating restaurants are committed to inclusion and safety, providing a friendly atmosphere for all guests. To launch the Lieferando Pride Guide, Lieferando is hosting an event featuring voices from the community to celebrate the diversity, self-determination, equality, and pride of the LGBTQIA+ community. The guide will be available throughout Pride Month and will be continually updated with new queer-friendly restaurants across Germany. The guide starts with around 80 restaurants in 40 cities. Lucas Marquez Morato Fedrigo, Country Lead of Lieferando's internal LGBTQIA+ committee, states, "Our goal is for all people, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, to feel equally treated and, above all, safe. The Lieferando Pride Guide is another step towards making this vision a reality. It is especially important in these times to actively combat intolerance and violence. And we, as a delivery service, see this as our duty."

Further Statistics on Discrimination in Restaurants

The survey results are more than sobering, especially in 2024.

  • 47% of gay respondents reported experiencing derogatory whispers, while 34.1% noticed being openly stared at.
  • 40.9% encountered dismissive gestures, and 15.9% overheard other guests complaining to restaurant staff about them.
  • Additionally, 22.7% reported that other guests deliberately changed seats to increase distance.

The situation is particularly alarming for transgender individuals: 71% felt uncomfortable due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, and 57.9% experienced worse treatment because of it. These results clearly show the urgent need for safe and inclusive spaces.

The Lieferando Pride Guide aims to highlight these spaces and provide tips for restaurant partners on how to be more queer-friendly. Open displays of queer-friendliness increase the sense of safety for 45.5% of respondents. Among transgender respondents, this figure rises to 61.5%. The responses indicate that safety can be enhanced through employing queer staff (39%), staff training on sensitivity (34.6%), displaying LGBTQIA+-friendly symbols (31.4%), having a feedback & complaint system to report discriminatory behavior (28%), and providing gender-neutral restrooms (20%).

Many restaurants are already actively supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, including these four partner restaurants:

  • Tom's Wurst in Berlin is a true institution. Located in the heart of the Rainbow District in Schöneberg, it is a member of CSD Berlin, the Rainbow Fund Berlin, and other queer institutions. Tom's Wurst is also a regular stop on queer neighborhood tours in Schöneberg.
  • Snack Jack in Neckarbischofsheim is a great role model. Staff are trained on LGBTQIA+ topics to ensure respect for all guests. Snack Jack also has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination and avoids gender-specific language.
  • Hellas Grill Eilbek in Hamburg has been celebrating Pride Month for six years. They regularly place political statements against discrimination and racism on their menu boxes and prominently display the Pride flag. The owner, whose son is active in the LGBTQIA+ scene, supports AIDS relief and sponsors numerous LGBTQIA+ events.
  • Rocket Rice Milchreis in Cologne shows strong commitment to the queer community. Since opening, rainbow stickers have adorned the door, and the restaurant is decorated accordingly for CSD, with plans to involve a drag queen. The restaurant also regularly shares posts on Instagram highlighting the diversity and tolerance of customers and staff.
