July 30, 2024 - From July 17 to 19, Berlin once again became the center of the international tech industry. The WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2024 brought together 15,000 decision-makers, software developers, and IT professionals from around the world at the Messe Berlin to exchange the latest trends, innovations, and breakthroughs in the IT field.

Given the profound influence that artificial intelligence has had in the international discourse over the past year, it emerged as a central theme in many discussions at the WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2024. In addition to AI, the event also covered the latest insights in areas such as modern software development, DevOps, cloud, security, quality assurance, and software architecture, and explored the broader impact of technology on leadership, the economy, workplace culture, and the future of society.

The conference was opened by David Simas, former White House Political Director under President Barack Obama and former CEO of the Obama Foundation. In his opening speech, he discussed the impact of technology on democracy and our responsibility as a society to use it for good: "In a time when society is destabilized by deepfakes and the rapid spread of information, developers cannot wait for others to approach them. Personal responsibility, leadership responsibility toward others, and the responsibility to serve society are integral parts of the societal code that is embedded in everything we do."

Among the renowned speakers at this year's event were Jonas Andrulis, CEO and founder of Aleph Alpha, Katrin Lehmann, CIO of Mercedes-Benz, Jürgen Müller, CTO of SAP SE, Prashanth Chandrasekar, CEO of Stack Overflow, Eric Demuth, CEO of Bitpanda, Demetris Cheatham, Chief of Staff to the CEO of GitHub, David Heinemeier Hansson, co-owner & CTO of 37signals, Peter Bosch, CEO of CARIAD, Kris Rasmussen, CTO of Figma, Constantijn van Oranje-Nassau, Special Envoy of Techleap, Scott Chacon, co-founder of GitHub, and Mike Brock, CEO of TBD (part of Block).

In numerous lectures, conversations, presentations, and panel discussions, executives and participants concluded that AI will significantly shape the role of software engineers in the future. As Jürgen Müller, CTO of SAP SE, stated: "There are different perspectives on the era of generative AI in development. One extreme is that AI will completely replace developers - that won't happen. The other extreme is that AI will have no impact on developers - that won't happen either. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Developers who continuously evolve and learn will also be successful in the future."

Sead Ahmetovic, co-founder and CEO of WeAreDevelopers, is convinced that the congress provided an important impetus for IT professionals to expand their skills and continue to develop in the face of ongoing upheavals in the industry. Ahmetovic emphasized: "As developers, we are not only responsible for ourselves and the companies we work for but also for society as a whole. With this additional responsibility and the technical possibilities of AI, we are jointly obligated to use our knowledge for a better future for all. Software developers and IT professionals are the driving force behind every innovation and, as such, have a strong influence on corporate strategies and success."

"Companies and developers depend on each other. At the WeAreDevelopers World Congress, they can network and exchange ideas, which not only leads to better software but also to a better working environment," emphasizes Rudi Bauer, Managing Director of WeAreDevelopers.

Europe's Largest Coding Competition

The finale of CODE100, Europe's largest coding competition, took place at this year's WeAreDevelopers World Congress. The competition began in November 2023 in Zagreb, went through preliminary rounds in Manchester and Amsterdam, and concluded with a grand finale in Berlin. Vladyslav Krasnolutskyi emerged as the CODE100 Champion 2024 in front of more than 3,000 spectators.
