#61 Digital companions for skin conditions? Oliver Welter, Nia Health

Jul 10, 2024 | 27 Min.

A constant itching sensation that periodically intensifies, along with inflamed and irritated skin: neurodermatitis presents itself as a persistent skin condition. A flare-up, during which symptoms like itching and redness worsen, can have different causes and effects for each individual. To identify these triggering moments, accurate and detailed documentation is essential.

Neurodermatitis is a non-contagious and chronic skin condition that poses a significant health challenge, especially for children. Not only is the prevalence of the disease considerable, but it also severely affects the daily lives of those affected, causing a high level of suffering and distress.

“Many people are faced with the challenge of having to live with the condition. We don’t provide a diagnosis, but we help people with their therapy and in managing neurodermatitis,” reflects Oliver Welter, CTO and Co-Founder of Nia Health, on the founding story of the neurodermatitis app Nia.

Key question today: How are digital innovations and technologies changing the dynamics of healthcare, and what impact do they have on improving patient care and the efficiency of clinical processes?

#60 From gut feeling to big data: Is AI changing investing? Eva-Valerie Gfrérer, Morphais

Jul 10, 2024 | 29 Min.

The saying “It takes one to know one” reflects a human tendency: the preference for the familiar. While the feeling of the known and trusted often makes it easier to navigate through life, it can have consequences—especially when it hinders openness to new and unfamiliar things. The tendency to rely on the tried and true when making decisions and to exclude the new can have particularly negative effects in the world of investing.

A study by the AI-based venture tech company Morphais shows that investment decisions in venture capital-funded startups are influenced not only by the talent of the founding team but also significantly by their similarity to the investor. Relying solely on gut feeling clouds judgment: decisions become purely subjective and are often influenced by bias.

Eva-Valerie Gfrérer, CEO and founder of Morphais, notes: “Relying solely on gut feeling is the wrong approach. We tend to overvalue the opinions of people who are close to us, which leads to subjective decisions and ultimately to homogeneous founder groups and low diversity.” In response, she founded Morphais in Berlin in 2020 and developed AI technology to identify and invest in innovative founders across Europe.

Key question today:
How can venture capitalists make their decision-making more objective in order to move beyond the familiar and give innovative startups greater opportunities?

#59 E-Commerce 2.0: AI-driven shopping? Marc Funk, Frontnow

Jul 10, 2024 | 25 Min.

Why is it often so complicated to find exactly what I’m looking for in an online shop? It’s a question most of us have probably asked ourselves at some point. But imagine visiting an online store that immediately understands your needs, wishes, and questions. That’s no longer a vision of the future—it’s already a reality.

The Berlin-based startup Frontnow, led by founder and managing director

Marc Funk has successfully achieved exactly that. The Frontnow Advisor enables online retailers to offer personalized, needs-based customer advice—just like in a physical store—across all digital channels. This is made possible by an algorithm that draws on data from the product catalog and can process any form of data, whether structured or unstructured.

“In the past 20 years, the biggest innovation in online retail was accepting crypto as a payment method,” says Marc Funk. “But the customer experience in pre-sales has barely improved during that time. With Frontnow, we’re now fundamentally changing that. Why pre-sales? Because that’s where the money is made in retail.”

Key question today: Can artificial intelligence make the online shopping experience more personal and interactive for customers again?
